•An anesthetized rabbit was deployed to examine effectiveness of CNXII nerve stimulation to relieve oropharyngeal obstruction.•The effect of stimulation was pronounced on the medial branch than the trunk of the hypoglossal nerve.•One predominant effect of a reduction in airflow resistance was observed to be the size and shape of the retropalatal area.•The model recapitulates some features of human obstructive sleep apnea and may serve as a platform to improved neurostimulation technology.
