•Cu–Ni on TiO2, ZrO2, and CeO2 were compared for HDO of DBF at 250, 260 and 270°C.•Cu–Ni/TiO2 achieved highest DBF conversion at 250 and 250°C.•CeO2 and TiO2 supported catalysts achieved equal conversion at 270°C.•Cu–Ni/TiO2 express highest selectivity to Bicyclohexane at all temperature.•The increase in temperature influence both conversion and selectivity positively.
