•Leaves of tobacco plants were inoculated with transformed Agrobacterium rhizogenes harboring coat protein (CP) gene of JgCSMV.•Recombinant JgCSMV CP was expressed to a high level in hairy roots developed from inoculated leaves.•Recombinant CP assembled into 30-nm virus-like particles (VLPs) in vivo in the absence of nucleic acid.•The VLPs were purified and manipulated to allow opening and closure of surface pores.•The VLPs were used as nanocontainers for efficient loading of the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin.
