•Instabilities of rippled structures in rotating detonation are studied by high-order simulations.•Previously-mentioned Kelvin–Helmholtz instability is confirmed as mechanism of instabilities.•Baroclinic torque and Rayleigh–Taylor instability are found as another two mechanisms.•Spike- and bubble-like appearance of interface are found as consequence of integrated mechanisms.
