•Forebody and base heat flux on a typical Crew Module is experimentally measured.•Two facilities are used to simulate 1.5–3.73MJ/kg enthalpy ranges.•Fay–Riddell correlation for stagnation point heat flux is modified.•Lewis number, velocity gradient and real gas effects are accounted.•Modified Fay–Riddell correlation matches well within 10% against measured values.
