•Inhibition of high degree of delignification (DD) on cellulose conversion is studied.•Highest DD of 96.58% results in a dramatic reduction of cellulose conversion.•The reduced conversion is due to cell wall collapse and microfibril reaggregation.•Certain amount of lignin should be reserved for improving cellulose conversion.
