•Biodiesel was obtained by two-step processing (esterification followed by transesterification) of turkey rendering fat.•The effect of TRFB10, TRFB20 and TRFB50 blends was analyzed at 2000 rpm under different loads.•TRFB blends reduce smoke opacity but cause a slight increase in NOx emissions compared to diesel fuel (DF).•Higher CPmax and HRRmax and lower EGT were found with TRFB blends compared to DF.•TRFB blends caused lower BTE and higher BSFC compared to DF.
