•Multiaxial low cycle fatigue tests under non-proportional loading were performed.•Fatigue lives in non-proportional tests were shorter compared to proportional tests.•In the circle loading, the number of cracks increased from very early stage.•Increasing rates of cracks were also higher in the circle loading.•Non-proportionality accelerates the crack formation, leading to shorter fatigue lives.
