•An innovative, cement-free SRF binder was used to produce eco-friendly mortar.•The maximum compressive strength value of the cement-free mortars was 40 MPa.•The mortars showed progressively better compressive strength values after 120 days.•Producing cementless mortar that delivers good, long-term durability is feasible.•The mortars produced using the SRF binder exhibited good sulfate resistance.
