•We investigate electrostatically induced interfacial instabilities at small scales.•Mixing is studied in devices without imposed velocity fields or moving parts.•Two- and three-dimensional flows, containing realistic fluids, are considered.•We use the volume-of-fluid method to study the flows well into the nonlinear regime.•Symmetry-breaking voltage distributions enhance the achieved level of mixing.
