Effects of dietary polydextrose on in vitro intestinal absorption rate in rats

We investigated the effects of polydextrose, cellulose and guar gum on in vitro passive and active carrier-mediated transport rates and transcellular permeation rate in the small intestine of rats, and compared the effects of polydextrose to those of cellulose and guar gum. Animals were fed diets supplemented with 7 g/100 g polydextrose, cellulose or guar gum for 1 or 5 wk. Feeding of the guar gum diet for either 1 or 5 wk significantly increased mucosal and muscular weights of the small intestine compared to feeding of the polydextrose and the cellulose diets. When rats were fed each diet for 1 wk, the passive carrier-mediated transport rate was significantly lower in both the polydextrose and the guar gum dietary groups than in the cellulose dietary group. Active carrier-mediated transport rate and transcellular permeation rate tended to be lower in both the polydextrose and the guar gum dietary groups than in the cellulose dietary group. However, when rats were fed each diet for 5 wk, no difference was found among three dietary groups in either passive and active carrier-mediated transport rates or transcellular permeation rate.
