•Musca domestica is a synanthropic species with potential forensic value.•The development of M. domestica is monitored from 16 to 34°C.•Three developmental models are constructed, which can be used to estimate PMImin.•The developmental threshold temperature and thermal constant were obtained.•We report a case that utilized the development of M. domestica to estimate PMImin.
