•This study compared departures before and after wake recat implementation at Charlotte (CLT).•Departures and demand loaded highly onto Factor 1, arrival demand and departure delays onto Factor 2, and taxi-out time onto Factor 3.•In a negative binomial mixed-effects model, only gate departure delay was significant in instrument approach conditions for selected runway configurations in both samples.•Wake recat increased departure pushes throughout the day instead of a few peak throughput periods.
