An analysis has been made of a commonly-used and widely-recommended impact test for adhesives, the Block Impact Test. It has been shown that this test has various limitations, related mainly to the difficulty in setting up the specimen and to the need to attach the impact apparatus rigidly to a stiff and heavy base. Finite element analysis has been used to indicate how the nature of the principal stresses in the adhesive depends on the precision with which the impactor comes into contact with the specimen.
