The sound of Agnès Varda In most films sound is slave to the image, especially dialogue, but also effects. This article examines the practice and presents some examples where sound has been used more contrapuntally and creatively, thus enriching the form, with ` special reference to Agnes Varda's early films. KEYWORDS Varda film sound synchronicity Flaubert dialogue Resnais Some years ago I was asked to write a book on Francois Truffaut's film ´ La Nuit americaine/Day for Night (1973), his joyful tribute to the medium of cinema, which, as he put it, gave him a life. It includes many wonderful moments as when one woman says to another who is quitting the film to go off with a stunt man: `I would always leave a man for a film but never a film for a man!' The sequence that is most memorable is when an older actress, played by Valentina Cortese, has trouble remembering her lines, not helped by her drinking champagne to calm her nerves. Truffaut himself plays the director. After several takes which are aborted, an increasingly upset actress suggests she could do as she does for Federico (Cortese had indeed acted for Fellini).
