The myth of Gillespie Kidd & Coia Modern architecture in Glasgow is still generally associated with the unlikely exotic name of ‘Coia’. The Italian Glaswegian architect, Jack Coia, ran the firm of Gillespie Kidd & Coia for almost half a century and became associated with a large number of striking, if also problematic buildings erected in and around Glasgow in the 1950s and 1960s, mainly for the Roman Catholic church. Yet few in Glasgow really understand that the name of Coia actually stood and stands for a much larger, more complex and, indeed, more interesting phenomenon. Abstract

The Italian Glaswegian architect, Jack Coia, ran the firm of Gillespie Kidd & Coia for almost half a century and became associated with a large number of striking, if also problematic buildings erected in and around Glasgow in the 1950s and 1960s, mainly for the Roman Catholic church. Yet few in Glasgow really understand that the name of Coia actually stood and stands for a much larger, more complex and, indeed, more interesting phenomenon.
