AbstractThis article is an updated version of a lecture given at the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, McGill University, Montreal, in October 2OO1. The aim is to describe briefly the history, cultural holdings, comprehensive services, international exchanges and contacts as well as the latest development trends of the three largest libraries in China, that is, the National Library of China, the Shanghai Library,l and the Nanjing Library. It shows the rapid development of Chinese librarianship in the last century and its bright future.
