This is a magnificent collection of essays on the subject of ḥadÄ«th scholarship. The Routledge series of ‘Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies’, for those who are unfamiliar with the format, marks an important new initiative in the publication of material on the subject. Unlike the Variorum presentation with which most of us have long been familiar, the articles in these volumes are completely re-typeset in a common format and each volume is continuously paginated, all of which gives a much greater homogeneity and elegance to the whole. All the collections amount to between three and six full-length volumes.
