interactive object, that is, an object not bound to a specific function but designed with the goal of improving our understanding of a given interaction primitive, with potential applications in a variety of contexts. With such a device, it was possible to show the effectiveness of sound as a feedback to reach a state of equilibrium, even without any visual cues. Since it was possible to compare a real rolling ball with its virtual model, it became also clear that a simplified physics-based sound synthesis may be more effective than the real sound or its recording. This highlighted the importance of dynamic sound models in interfaces, whose acoustic manifestations do not need to be realistic in order to be perceived as physically consistent. As suggested by its name, the SOb project had also the goal to investigate the objectivity of sound, that is the nature of audible objects. In the framework of ecological psychology the attention has been focusing on sound sources and their properties (Gaver 1993): sounding objects. The terms of sonic representations are to be found as invariants of the structure or behavior of the sources. For example, it is the temporal pattern of bounces and
