This article discusses the film Berberian Sound Studio (2012) in the context of the career and influences of its director, . Decisions to focus the audience's attention on sound and the effect of using the audio track to visualise images is one of the most striking aspects of the film. He is one of the core members of The Sonic Catering Band.1 Born in Reading, he is Greek on his mother's side and British on his father's. He traces his fascination with cinema and sound to a visit to the Scala cinema at the age of sixteen to see David Lynch's Eraserhead (Lynch 1977). He started to make short films in 1990 and after a period of disillusionment he returned to filmmaking after receiving a legacy. In an interview with Ronald Bergan he described the dilemma as: `I asked myself, "Should I buy myself a one-bedroom flat in Bracknell or should I make a revenge film in Transylvania?" I think
