ISBN ° 8240 5787 2 It is a truism that much of British library history, in recent years at least, has been rather narrowly focused on particular institutions, persons or developments. Few of us have attempted the wider view. No single-volume, modern overview by a British author has appeared for some years and no practical compendium, for example a lexicon of library history, has ever been attempted. A brief introduction to the subject intended for the non-specialist professional or general reader is a desideratum, and will remain one even after the publication of the long-anticipated (but multi- volume and discursive) A history of libraries in Britain and Ireland. As so often, we must look to our colleagues overseas for possible models.
