The first of these pamphlets carries a note that it is largely taken from the author's unpublished FLA thesis, A Study of libraries in Salisbury, 1700-1850 (1973). The same is true of the second, although it does not say as much. It may perhaps have required greater revision for publication in this series after ten years, and of the two, is of the more general interest. Fancourt's name appears in virtually every account of English library history of the eighteenth century. He is sufficiently famous to have been included in the DNB, where he is designated 'dissenting minister and projector of circulating libraries'. Fancourt's career began in the non- conformist ministry which brought him to Salisbury in 172I.
