Printing the Third Volume of Jonson's Works

Printing the Third Volume of Jonson's Works PETER HAPPÉ This account of the posthumous third volume of the 1640–41 edition of Jonson’s Works (F2(3)) concentrates upon three aspects. It addresses the contribution of some of the people involved in it; it considers some characteristics of the volume; and it describes some production features, especially watermarks and some of the type used, and in doing so proposes a narrative for the book’s production. Although there is still more work to be done on a very large topic, it reflects upon whether the printer, John Dawson Jr., respected Jonson’s wishes and intentions. Because Jonson did not live to take part in or monitor its printing, F2(3) emerged in circumstances differing from those of the earlier volumes. Yet there do remain distinct possibilities that parts of it were set from his autograph or from copies he had corrected in preparation for this collected edition.1 Participants The printing of the third volume of the Works was first attributed to John Dawson Jr. by D. F. McKenzie, who found a number of print items in the volume in other works printed by Dawson.2 The chief of these were the factotum on B1, a damaged upper case H (3A1 and 3I3v), http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Ben Jonson Journal Edinburgh University Press
