PETER SELLARS Presentation at the 2015 School of Sound 1. Peter Sellars spoke, via Skype, to the School of Sound International Symposium at the Southbank Centre, Good afternoon everyone. I’m very, very jealous and wish I was there with London, on 10 April 2015. you, because these sessions seem incredible. This gathering is really, really, really thrilling. And some of my deepest teachers in sound are in London. I actually had many of my most profound sound experiences on Endell Street in Covent Garden, just a few blocks from the Royal Opera House. I was directing at one time in my life Hindemith’s huge monster of an opera, Mathis der Maler, about an artist’s ability to engage with the powers of this world. And you know, the Opera House orchestra really didn’t appreciate having to play Hindemith at the same time as they were playing Aida and Swan Lake. It was a little exhausting and it was winter and cold and I was walking around Covent Garden just trying to escape the Royal Opera House and I heard the sound of a sitar. And I looked on my left and there was shop called Designer Sandwiches (audience laughter). And
