/. Soc. Biblphy nat. Hist. (1976) (1): 31 On the dating of the first edition of Cuvier's Regne Animal By CHARLES ROUX Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. Whitehead (1967) pointed out that Cuvier's Regne Animal distribue d'apres son organisahas never been consistently dated in spite of its great importance for nomenclation ture. Cuvier himself, in the Introduction to the Histoire naturelle des poissons (Vol. 1, ... 1828, : 218) wrote: C'est en 1817 qu'a paru mon tableau du Regne animal, mais methodc des 1815 (i.e. the Memoires du museum, vol. 1] j'avais indique les bases de ma and in the C'est sur same Introduction premiere revue mon (p.252) he said: que j'ai redige pendant les annees si troublees de 1814 et 1815 la Regne animal publie en 1817. This would seem to confirm the dating and 1817 is indeed the date given on all four volumes of the Regne animal. However, a number of authors (listed by Whitehead, loc.cit.) have thought that some or all the volumes were published in 1816 and Whitehead accepted as the true date 17 December 1816 (error for 7 December as pointed out by cette Partie des Poissons de Cowan, 1969). I have ate now had the good fortune to find an even earlier and indication of the date in the following work: seances presumably more accur- Anon., 1915. Le troisieme volume est a I'anatomie comparee, par M. Cuvier, Secretaire entierement de M. Latreille. perpe'tuel, Thus, the four volumes of Cuvier's Regne animal were presented at the session of the Academy of Sciences on Monday 2 December 1816, making it practically certain that at least the last volume was published late in November and the others perhaps even earlier. The correct dating for the Regne animal is, therefore, beyond any doubt 1816 and until further evidence is found it should be cited for all four volumes as November 1816.
