This would seem to confirm the dating and 1817 is indeed the date given on all four volumes of the Regne animal. However, a number of authors (listed by Whitehead, loc.cit.) have thought that some or all the volumes were published in 1816 and Whitehead accepted as the true date 17 December 1816 (error for 7 December as pointed out by cette Partie des Poissons de Cowan, 1969). Latreille. perpe'tuel, Thus, the four volumes of Cuvier's Regne animal were presented at the session of the Academy of Sciences on Monday 2 December 1816, making it practically certain that at least the last volume was published late in November and the others perhaps even earlier.
