Here was a magical place where the original L-plan towerhouse remained strong and steadfast against the elements, whilst Lorimer's additions could clearly be seen as such but showed tremendous tact and sympathy. The narrow pend, for example, leading into the sheltered courtyard enhances the drama of the old tower. The baronial splendour of the Red Banner Hall contrasted with the intimate boudoir then via a tight passage onto the Loggia with its spectacular views down the Loch and to the serenity of the vaulted library. What a fabulous place, what a magical place. It was obviously with great pleasure that I agreed to review this book devoted to the Castle and its inhabitants. The book, I soon discovered, is about far more than the architectural history of a Scottish towerhouse. The author takes us not only through the history of the Clan MacNachtan but also weaves their story into the history of the Scottish Nation.
