This collection, from the admirable Walking Tree Publishers, brings together sixteen essays investigating the influence of the Great War on Tolkien’s fiction (in the main), with sections on ‘The Conduct of War’, ‘Biography’, ‘Roots of Major Themes of the Legendarium’, and ‘Alterity’. The aim of the collection is to produce ‘a variety of perspectives on the war’s impact on Tolkien’s writing’ (iv), and in this it succeeds. We get input from literary scholars, military historians, and others. The collection begins with a comprehensive chronology detailing Tolkien’s activities from 1914 through 1919 (when he was demobilized) and then presents a series of essays that explore a range of topics – some definite, some speculative. The collection contributes to Tolkien scholarship in four ways. First, it posits ideas and connections which hitherto had not been considered (e.g., John Garth’s discussion of the development of Arthur Machen’s ‘Angel of Mons’ and Tolkien’s revenants and angels).
