In Memoriam — Jill Forbes 21 June 1947–13 July 2001 Founding editor of Paragraph, 1983 Member of editorial committee, 1983–1994 Advisory editor, 1995–2001 Jill Forbes was one of the most influential figures in French Studies in the UK, and one of the most dynamic and creative. At the time of her death from cancer at the age of 54, she was Professor of French and Head of Modern Languages at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London and had embarked on a major comparative study of film studios in France and other European countries. Indeed, in April 2001, despite suffering from breathlessness and the effects of her treatment for the cancer, Jill insisted on honouring her commitment to give four lectures at the University of Paris in which she explored the differences, similarities and interactions between post-war British and French cinema through an analysis of the successes of the Ealing film studios and their French counterpart at Epinay. These lectures were important for the way in which they fused the complexities of contemporary cultural theory with analyses of popular hit films. They were also a marvellous testament to Jill’s energy, commitment to her discipline and sheer personal courage.
