In this 414-page memoir-cum-intellectual autobiography, Antoni Libera offers a lively account (in Polish) of his early years as a Beckett acolyte, from the time he saw Godot as an 8-year-old on the Warsaw stage to the time of his first meeting with Beckett in Paris at the age of 29. Recalling the drabness of his youth in the hopeless atmosphere of early post-war Poland, Libera sets the stage for his fateful encounters with Beckett (first through his works, then in person), who served as an inspirational beacon in his professional and personal life. It was in autumn of 1957, during the first year of the post-Stalinist thaw, that the 8-year-old first heard the expression ‘waiting for Godot’, which had become a leitmotif of the frustrations felt by many, in light of the changes promised by Gomulka’s ‘reformed’ Communist government. As it happened, Godot had been playing to packed houses (in Polish) in Warsaw’s Contemporary Theatre for ten months before his parents were able to secure tickets.
