Gerald Siegmund, Abwesenheit: Eine performative Ästhetik des Tanzes – William Forsythe, Jérôme Bel, Xavier Le Roy, Meg Stuart , Bielefeld: Transcript, 2006, 502pp+illus. ISBN: 3-89942-478-6.

The utopia that this book discusses was founded on a radical view of society on the one hand and philanthropy backed by American riches on the other. However, there is so much to admire about the Elmhirst’s ‘utopia’ and the place that dance was accorded in it. Had the welcome that was extended to dance, dancers and radicalism by the Elmhirsts at Dartington in the thirties been seen on the wider British social stage, then the history of dance in the UK would have been quite different. We might also reflect on the challenge to a London-centred dance culture that this utopia represented. It remains to be seen whether we can rise to the challenge of fulfilling the cultural promise for dance initiated in that time. This book serves as a healthy reminder about some of the things that are important for a healthy and progressive dance culture.
