The design drawings of many of the architects whose collections have been catalogued as part of the Scottish Architects' Papers Preservation Project demonstrate the social reform, cultural changes, national policies and government legislation that led to the metamorphosis of Scotland from a rural based economy to a modern industrial nation in the period from the 1860s to the middle of the twentieth century. This paper examines the designs of dwellings, modified and produced by these architects, in order to trace a path towards contemporary issues in rural housing.
