She calls attention to the disciplines of history, theology, ecclesiology, sociology and anthropology and alerts readers to significant themes of locality, culture, power, syncretism, context and conversion. There is a welcome plea to take theology seriously; that is, to understand familiar Christian beliefs and the ways they motivate and are differently articulated. Section 15, Discerning Theology in Context, illustrates how gender and family are constructed through theological discourse, and an article on Dalit liturgy explores its theological content and implications. Yet the collection contains little of the formal Christian theology emerging across the globe. This is regrettable, even in a series which is firmly rooted in the discipline of Religious Studies. A section on this area would have expanded the global range of writers. More significantly, theologies emerging from Africa, Asia and Latin America have been so powerfully informed by context and thus by history and the social sciences that inclusion in such a volume would provide opportunities for comparison and mutual illumination.
