After decades of relative neglect, rooted in bias or ideology, the last twenty years have witnessed a belated surge of academic studies of Tolkien’s work. This much-needed resurgence is largely thanks to the crucial contributions made by the volumes of the Cormarë Series, published by the Swiss publisher Walking Tree since 1997. The most recent release, Sub-Creating Arda, marks an important milestone; it is fitting, therefore, that the volume is so substantial not only in length but also in scope and ambition. The collection is edited by Thomas Honegger, a founder and editor of the series, and Dimitra Fimi, who is co-responsible for, among other works, an enlightening recent edition of Tolkien’s essay on invented languages (‘A Secret Vice’, HarperCollins, 2016). Indeed, Tolkien’s famous claim that his myth-creation followed and supported his ‘secret vice’ of inventing imaginary languages (accordingly, a pure exercise in ‘phonaesthetics’), and not vice versa, could serve as epigraph for this volume.
