Stewardson, offered me a research position to assist in a recently-established programme to study the X-radiation from the sun – at that time the only known source of cosmic X-rays. This paper contains some of my recollections and impressions of my subsequent participation in the British collaborative programme of international space research, first at University of Leicester and, subsequently, from 1965 onwards, at University College London (UCL). Until 1980 I was involved in trans-Atlantic collaboration, which took me to the United States of America on a regular basis, and I also found myself collaborating with space scientists from other European countries. By the late 1950s, the University of Leicester had built up a notable space science group in its Physics department, however, it was not the only British university building such research groups.
