Lazarus Phiri Pioneers Mission Organisation Burdick, John. 2004. Legacies of Liberation: The Progressive Catholic Church in Brazil at the Start of a New Millenium. Aldershot: Ashgate Publishing Company, pp. 144. This is an excellent book, which provides an important update on the status of liberationism in Brazil. Where eleven years previous, Burdick understood liberation theology to be in decline and perhaps dying out, as his book Looking for God in Brazil detailed, this new book argues that progressive Catholicism still strongly influences Brazilian society. At the same time, Burdick expands the sociological discussion of ‘outcomes’, arguing that researchers could consider not only the links between action and its successful intended changes, but also outcomes that are ‘unanticipated’ or ‘unintended’. Burdick’s work is based on years of fieldwork in Brazil, including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and analysis of primary documents. In the introduction he provides a brief synopsis of the emergence of liberationism, its conflict with the Roman Catholic hierarchy, and its subsequent crisis.
