Polish director Lech Majewskiâs most recent ï¬lm, The Mill and the Cross (2011) is a meticulous recreation of the environment of Pieter Brueghel the Elderâs painting, The Way to Calvary. As an imagining of the interior world of Brueghelâs painting and of the artistâs relationship with it, The Mill and the Cross explores the tension between the ï¬atness of the painted image and the depth of experience of the protagonists.
