Abstract

Kristen Sparhawk Established by leading Labanotor and scholar Ann Hutchinson Guest in 1967, the Language of Dance Centre (LODC) has been instrumental in the furtherance of movement study and Labanotion in the UK and world-wide. The major aim of the organision has been to establish movement and its alphabet of accompanying Labanoted symbols as a living language which can enjoy the academic and socially communicive value th all written and spoken languages have had for centuries; allowing for the creion of libraries containing noted texts which preserve the world's dance heritage in an intelligible form, and faciliting discourse and educion concerning movement. Linguistic recognition becomes even more vital for dance in an age dissemining increasingly more informion and knowledge through electronic means. This goal is continuously being worked towards the Centre through its various working projects in dance preservion, Labanotion evolvement and refinement, and movement educion for all ages. The resources the Centre reflect directly the work it has done and still undertakes. There is an extensive library of noted merial preserving artistic works, ethnic and social dances, con- tributing to human movement research, and the largest collection in the world of resources on various systems of movement
