Anglo-Scottish Relations, 1296–1389: Some Recent Essays

The Scottish Hisrical Review, Volume LXXIV, 1: No. 197: April 1995, 99-108 BRUCE WEBSTER Anglo-Scottish Relations, Some Recent Essays as a 1296-1389: Ages, and even the sixteenth century, have often been time of conflict between England and Scodand. In fact, represented for much of the period, there was litde open warfare. Fighdng was regular from 1296 till the truce of 1323; intermittent, though at times serious, from then till 1388; and at most occasional from then on nil the Treaty of Edinburgh in 1560, after which there was no more formal war. The subject of Anglo-Scottish relations involves much more than attempts at English conquest and the defence of Scottish independence, vital though these are as a framework; any detailed study must involve at least three elements. First, there are the Wars of Independence themselves, which lasted from Edward Ts seizure of Berwick and deposition of King John in 1296 till the Treaty of Edinburgh/Northampn in 1329; began again with the invasion of 1332 by Edward Balliol and the 'disinherited', a number of Scottish or Anglo-Scottish nobles who had been deprived of their inheritances by Robert I; and were intensified in 1333, with the intervention on their behalf http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Scottish Historical Review Edinburgh University Press
