A Rhyming Translation of Sūrat al-Layl (Q. 92) Shawkat M. Toorawa YALE UNIVERSITY Sūrat al-Layl (Q. 92) poses special challenges if one wishes to render the rhyme (and rhythm). Most of the verses are short, and all 21 of these end in the same rhyme sound. I doubt the following translation does the sura justice, but it is my hope that it pays it homage. I dedicate it to the memory of my late uncle, Ibrahim H. Toorawa. 92 The Night In the name of God ever compassionate full of compassion By Night and its cover by Day and its splendour and the Maker of gender— your efforts differ We ease to Serenity the generous Godfearer who accepts what is Better We ease to Difficulty the selfish miser who rejects what is Better whose riches will not avail him when he plummets into the Fire! Ours is the Guidance to offer Ours the Omega and the Alpha! Heed My warning of a raging Fire scorching each wretched transgressor who gainsays and turns away!
