Price, editors. 2010. The ecology of place: contributions of place-based research to ecological understanding. Part 2, ‘‘The idiosyncrasy of place: challenges and opportunities,’’ explores how place-based research can gain understanding from the inherent spatial and temporal variability of ‘‘place.’’ In Chapter 4, Pulliam and Waser consider invariance in ecological systems and argue for viewing variability as an opportunity, not a problem, partly by comparing multiple places. They conclude with a discussion of the value of a ‘‘natural history intuition’’ and of developing multiple working hypotheses iteratively over time spent in ‘‘places.’’ Chapter 5 (Rundel), again arguing for comparing places, is an overview of our understanding of convergence and divergence in Mediterranean-climate ecosystems. Obviously, the spatial scale of ‘‘place’’ in this chapter is vastly greater than that in others.
