The project comprises three series, all under the general editorship of Bernhard Fabian: Series I: Handbuch der historischen Buchbestände in Deutschland, 27 volumes in 28 (Hildesheim: Olms-Weidmann, 1992 – 98); Series II: Handbuch der historischen Buchbestände in Österreich, 4 vols. (Hildesheim: Olms-Weidmann, 1994 – 97); Series III: Handbuch deutscher historischer Buchbestände in Europa, 10 volumes in 12 (Hildesheim: Olms-Weidmann, 1997 – 2001). In what follows, the Handbuch is referred to by series, volume, and page number. Common Knowledge 8:2 Copyright 2002 by Duke University Press to extend the coverage of the enterprise not only to libraries in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) but also to those in the Eastern bloc countries. The result is that we now have forty-four volumes covering almost every European library with German collections of significance. (“Almost” is perhaps an exaggeration, because even Professor Fabian’s charms could not persuade the Swiss to collaborate; so far there is no coverage of French libraries, not even those of Paris or Strasbourg.
