In the music video “Like Orpheus,” by the Israeli heavy metal band Orphaned Land, an ultra- Orthodox Jewish man and a Muslim woman come to share a spiritual union through their love and devotion to the sounds of heavy metal. It is a union or communion that can be experienced by all listeners. When they reach the privacy of their rooms, each listener puts on a headphone and lets the music take over. All begin to move their bodies freely. The woman imagines her - self playing guitar and drums; the man sways his head and body as if in prayer. This freedom disrupts neither one’s identity: she never removes her hijab; he never takes off his kipah. Then, as they prepare to don their concert apparel and head for a venue where they will never come into contact— he is going to wear a Kreator zip hoodie bearing the band’s logo, and she an Orphaned Land hoodie with a spiked bracelet— each gently presses a kiss to what apparently sets them apart:
