The Negro’s Religion and Music The Negro's Religion and Music William Pickens The mystical effects and spiritual benefits of religion may not be so easily measurable in everyday terms, but its practical effects and ultimate bearing on human life are discernible even to the ordinary mind. The Negro's religious spirit has created other agencies and forces which will perhaps do more than any merely commercial or politi­ cal or purely economic powers to solve his problem in the United States, and in the world. Take the one product of music; cut off from his religion and his suffering experiences he made the Spirituals, a religious type of music through which he could triumph in imagination where he could not triumph in fact. This music has opened more doors to him than any other power he possesses, at least more doors to the minds and hearts of the most intelligent of his fellow citizens of other races. More millions of white persons in America have heard the Negro in music than in all other artistic performances combined. Many have listened to Negro music who perhaps may never have listened to any other attractive thing from the Negro .
