The Hymnal of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church Jon Michael Spencer The most recent hymnological endeavor of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church is The Hymnal of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, which was published by the CME Publishing House, in Memphis, in 1987. Its preface is probably the only printed document which chronicles the musical history of the denomination. Commencing with reference to John Wesley's A Collection of Psalms and Hymns (1737) and the hymns of Charles Wesley, the narrative proceeds to cover the creation of hlack spirituals, the lining-out style of "Dr. Watts" hymn-singing, and the singing of "improvised hymns." During the course of the present essay we will be referencing the preface's discussion of the CME hymnbook of 1891, its songbook of 1904, its 1950 adoption of the Methodist hymnbook of 1939, and its present hymnbook of 1987. The new CME hymnal is a blue hardbound volume with gold lettering. On its spine, and on the posterior of the title page above the copyright data, is the official logo of the church-a globe encircling the Christian Cross diag onally spanning its length, with a weather vane to the left of its lengthwise beam, an urban skyline
