Singing the New Song

Singing the New Song Downloaded from http://read.dukeupress.edu/black-sacred-music/article-pdf/8/2/89/793282/89turner.pdf by DEEPDYVE INC user on 13 February 2021 William C. Turner, Jr. I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry cla y, and set m y feet upon a rock , and established my goings . And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord -Psalm 40 There are songs that are no more than music. Anyone who can carry a tune can sing them. The only prerequisite is to know the sound cor responding to the position of the notes on the scale and to know the meter indicated by the markings that regulate the time. To sing such songs requires no particular orientation to the world, no commit ment in matters where truth and justice are at stake, no concern for those who suffer, no knowledge of the God who sets the captives free. Some of these songs can even be found under the categories of sacred music-the anthem, the hymn, the spiritual, the gospel. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Black Sacred Music Duke University Press
