Given the illuminating nature of Youngâs readings and the strength of the bookâs overall argument, it is pedantic (but satisfying to this envious reviewer) to point out an error in translation. The rendering of Catalepton 14.11â12 on page 108 (âAdsis o Cytherea: tuus te Caesar Olympo / et Surrentini litoris ara vocatâ) is wrong: et . . . ara should be âand the alter,â not âto the altarsâ (which would be ad aras)ââ â tiny flaw in a brilliantly sparkling book.
