Security: Politics, Humanity, and the Philology of Care

Security: Politics, Humanity, and the Philology of Care project a starting point, and it is testimony to the stimulating nature of her work that she leaves the reader eagerly anticipating her further exploration of these ideas in other Catullus poems. Given the illuminating nature of Young’s readings and the strength of the book’s overall argument, it is pedantic (but satisfying to this envious reviewer) to point out an error in translation. The rendering of Catalepton 14.11–12 on page 108 (“Adsis o Cytherea: tuus te Caesar Olympo / et Surrentini litoris ara vocat”) is wrong: et . . . ara should be “and the alter,” not “to the altars” (which would be ad aras) — tiny flaw in a brilliantly sparkling book.
