Preface The fourteen hymnists represented in this collection of unsung hymns by black and unknown bards are generally unfamiliar to the mass of contemporary African-American Christians. Joshua McCarter Simpson, Rev. F. M. Hamilton, Bishop Lucius H. Holsey, Rev. George Patterson McKinney, Sarah Collins Fernan­ dis, Elder John Howardton Smith, Bishop Mary L. Tate, Bishop Mary F. L. Keith, Elder H. C.Jackson, and Elder S. R. Chambers are virtually faceless. Bishop Richard Allen and Bishop Charles Harrison Mason (both denominational founders) and Robert Nathaniel Dett (a composer) are figures of historical notability, but they are unknown as hymnists. And Bishop Charles Price Jones (also a church founder) is recognized as a gospel hymn­ writer only among certain black church circles , principally among the black Holiness and Pentecostals. But in relation to the larger Afro-Christian community, Jones's reputation as a hymnist is in­ commensurate with his prolific output of some thousand hymns. While Rev. Charles Albert Tindley, the celebrated Methodist hymnist, composed less than one-twentieth the number of gospel hymns of Jones-and with no more sublime a poetic grace and veritably less musical skill-it is nonetheless Bishop Jones who is by and large the unknown bard.
