POPULARIZING THE POPULARIZER POPULARIZIT H E NG POPULARIZER Shakespeare, the Movie: Popularizing the Plays on Film, TK and Video Edited by Lynda E. Shakespeare, the Movie is a book - a collection of 16 scholarly essays juxtaposing “the discourses of Shakespeare criticism, film studies, performance criticism, and cultural studies.” The subtitle, Popularizing the Plays on Film, TK and Video, evokes questions: What is a “Shakespeare film”? What is a “popularized” film? Is “popularized” synonymous with “popular”? For editors Lynda E. Boose and Richard Burt, answering these questions is not a central concern. For the reader, defining the central terms of the book becomes essential when confronted with examinations of televised Othellos (“Race-ing Othello, Reen genderi ng W h i t e - 0 u t ,” by B arb ar a Hodgdon) or Prosper02 Books (“Shakespeare in the Age of Post-Mechanical Reproduction: Sexual and Electronic Magic in Prospero’s Books,” by Peter S.
