One of the threads connecting the three is the role of Calvinism in the American psyche. Another is the evolution of American religion over time and in different areas of the United States. Born in the cradle of American Calvinism, Dickinson powerfully intertwines faith and rebellion, in the process anticipating the conflicts in consciousness that characterize modern religion. O’Connor, a devout Catholic born in Savannah, Georgia, shows the action of grace in a series of backwoods freaks and fanatics, revealing with humor and compassion the incarnational possibilities in everyday southern life. Harries concludes with a discussion of Robinson, a writer who resists the easy carica - tures of Calvin (and Calvinism) prevalent in American culture. Her luminous t r i log y — Gilead, Home, and Lila— follows three Protestant pastors through three generations as they contend with faith amid the hardships of rural Iowa. In both her fiction and her essays, Robinson suggests that gratitude and wonder, respect for the “givenness of things,” can only emerge from a dialectic of faith and doubt that leaves a space for mystery.
