SUMMER 1983 IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

SUMMER 1983 IN THE UNITED KINGDOM SUMMER AS A WHOLE The northern hemisphere circulation pattern remained relatively conservative throughout the season. The main features were a deeper than usual polar vortex with the jet stream at 500 mb stronger than usual and displaced northwards. The upper flow was particularly strong in June and July in the Pacific between 40 and 50"N and throughout the season in the area south of Iceland. This flow pattern resulted in a strong seasonal Pacific anticyclone and a strong ridge into Europe from the Azores high with a + 6 mb anomaly over the UK. Most of North America and western Europe had a warm summer but it was persistently cool in southeast Europe, the eastern Mediterranean and western USSR. Central England Temperature 164°C England and Wales Rainfall 107 mm (49 per cent) - provisional The summer in England and Wales was the second driest this century: 1976 was drier (76 mm). However it was only the 6th warmest summer this century, considerably cooler than 1976 (CET 17.5"C) and about the same as 1975 (CET 16.8"C). R. A. S.
